# Base for investment professionals: data rooms and client reporting your clients can question

Clients and counterparties get a pile of decks, models and reports, and every question about them comes back to you. Put the material in a Base instead: it reads the documents and spreadsheets into facts that each keep their source quote, flags figures that disagree between documents, and lets each client question it in a browser or from the AI they already use, under access you set per person. When you add next quarter's report, their AI sees what changed the next time it checks.

## Three ways investment professionals use Base

1. Run a data room. Upload the financials, model, cap table, deck and contracts, invite each party by email, and turn downloads off or set an expiry date for the end of the process. On Pro, choose which documents each viewer sees. The steps are in [how to set up an AI-ready data room](https://createbases.com/guides/ai-data-room).
2. Report to clients over time. Add each update to the same Base, or on Pro email it to the Base's own address. Earlier versions are kept, a figure a later report updates is marked superseded, and a client's AI opens the Base with what changed since they last looked.
3. Let clients ask instead of email. A client asks their own Claude or ChatGPT about the material, and the answer cites the page, sheet or rows it came from. Spreadsheets are read row by row, and tables in PDFs stay tables, so an assistant can work through the figures itself.

## An illustrative example

This example is illustrative, not a customer's account. A fund's investor relations lead puts the quarterly letter, the portfolio model and two company updates in one Base and invites three limited partners as viewers.

1. One partner asks ChatGPT how a portfolio company's revenue compares with the last letter. The answer quotes both documents, and Base has already flagged that the update and the model give different figures for the same quarter, each with its quote.
2. Another partner's analyst asks Claude for the model's assumptions and gets the rows they came from.
3. Next quarter, the lead adds the new letter. Each partner's AI reports what changed the next time it opens the Base, and the earlier figures are marked superseded.

## Why investment professionals choose Base

- Answers are checkable. Every fact carries a verbatim quote and its source, and a fact whose quote is not in the source is dropped.
- Figures that disagree surface on their own, with both quotes, instead of in a late-night reconciliation.
- Each client uses their own AI. No one needs a seat in your tools or a particular assistant.
- Access is per person and checked on every request. A summary never reveals a document its reader cannot open, and removing someone takes effect on their next request.
- You can see that it is being used: every plan counts opens and AI connections, and Pro shows who opened it.

## Questions

### Can I share different documents with different investors?

Yes, on Pro. Invite each person as a viewer and choose which documents they see; a fact or summary reaches a viewer only when they can see every document behind it.

### Does Base replace a virtual data room?

For early diligence, investor updates and smaller deals, it does the core of one: permissioned sharing, per-person access, expiry and revocation checked on every request. It does not watermark documents, gate them behind an NDA, or run a managed Q&A between buyers and sellers. See [Base vs a virtual data room](https://createbases.com/compare/virtual-data-room).

### How do clients see updates?

Add the new report to the Base. Base reads it as soon as it arrives, usually within a few minutes, and a client's AI opens the Base with what changed since they last looked.

### Can I charge for research or reports?

Yes. Any Base can be sold. One-time or monthly, from $1, and Base keeps 10% of the price plus card processing (2.9% + 30¢). See [how to sell access to your research](https://createbases.com/guides/sell-access-to-documents).

### What does it cost my clients?

Nothing. Reading a Base, asking it questions and connecting it to an AI are free for everyone you share it with. Credits come from your workspace when the Base reads new documents.

### What does it cost me?

Base is free for 2 Bases with 300 credits and no card, and Pro is $20 a month per workspace, not per seat.
