Base vs DocSend
DocSend is built to show you how people read what you send: page-by-page analytics, NDAs, watermarks, viewer verification and data rooms. Base is built to help the reader understand it: Base reads the documents into cited facts and a timeline, and the reader can ask questions in the browser or from their own AI. If you need to know how long an investor spent on slide 7, use DocSend. If you want them to get answers with sources, use Base.

At a glance
| Base | DocSend | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Helping readers understand and question a set of documents | Tracking engagement with the documents you send |
| What you learn about readers | Opens and AI connections on every plan; who opened, on Pro | Who viewed each page of each document, and for how long |
| NDAs and watermarks | Not offered | NDA gating, dynamic watermarking and viewer verification on its Advanced plans |
| Data rooms | Every Base works as one, with per-file access on Pro | Spaces, with folder- and file-level permissions |
| Answers with sources | Built in; every fact carries a verbatim quote from its file | Not what DocSend is built around |
| AI apps | Readers connect Base in Claude, ChatGPT or any MCP app, under the access you set | For the sender's team: an MCP connector, in open beta on Advanced Data Rooms, brings their documents and visit activity into ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot |
When DocSend is the better choice
- Engagement is the signal you need, such as which investors read the financials and which stopped at the team slide.
- You need an NDA signed before anyone sees a document, or every page watermarked with the viewer's identity.
- Your process expects a dedicated data room product with those controls.
When Base is the better choice
- The reader has many documents to get through and needs to understand them, not just open them.
- They will ask questions, and you want each answer tied to the sentence it came from.
- Figures disagree across documents. Base reports both, each with its own quote, so nobody quietly picks one.
- The reader works in Claude, ChatGPT or another AI and wants the material there. DocSend's connector serves the sender's team; a Base can be connected by the people you send it to.
Using both
Some teams send the deck through DocSend for the engagement signal and the supporting documents as a Base for the questions that follow. For a full diligence process, see Base vs a virtual data room.
Questions
Does Base have page-level analytics like DocSend?
No. Base counts opens and AI connections on every plan and shows who opened a Base on Pro. It does not record time spent on each page.
Can I require an NDA before someone opens a Base?
No. Base has no NDA gate. The closest control is invite mode, where only the email addresses you name can open the Base, and each reader signs in to prove the address is theirs.
